Project Ubin Kakis addresses the urgent need to preserve Singapore's kampung heritage by creating meaningful partnerships between urban communities and Pulau Ubin's dwindling population of longtime residents.
The project's multifaceted approach addresses both immediate needs and long-term preservation goals. By focusing on infrastructure maintenance such as shop signs and informational boards, the team provides tangible benefits to the island's residents while preserving the authentic 1960s aesthetic that defines Pulau Ubin's character.
The initiative's emphasis on empowering residents to share their personal stories is particularly significant. In an era where Singapore's older generations often feel disconnected from rapidly modernising society, Project Ubin Kakis provides a platform for these voices to be heard and valued. This approach recognises that cultural heritage is not just about preserving physical artifacts, but about maintaining the living connections between people, place, and history.
In their 2nd run, Project Ubin Kakis also conducted guided walks for the SMU community, providing them with a firsthand experience of Pulau Ubin. This initiative serves to deepen the understanding and appreciation of the island’s cultural significance and empower residents to share their personal stories.
This project was supported by Tote Board Social Capital Initiative: SMU Inspiring Community Service Grant (2022 - 2024).
